ARISE offers a tuition-free, immersive 10-week research experience at a leading university, providing a significant stipend upon completion and valuable college application support.
The NYU Applied Research In Science and Engineering (ARISE) program is a tuition-free, 10-week summer research program for high school students in the New York City area. The program combines foundational training with hands-on research experience, offering unparalleled opportunities to conduct real-world scientific research at various NYU STEM labs. Students spend the first four weeks in remote evening workshops focusing on safety training, college writing, and research skills development. During the subsequent six weeks, participants work full-time (Monday-Friday, 9 AM - 4 PM) in one of over 80 NYU research labs, assisting faculty and graduate researchers on cutting-edge projects. Students gain approximately 150 hours of valuable lab experience, contribute to research objectives spanning engineering, life sciences, and computer and data sciences, and develop public speaking and other soft skills. The program culminates in a colloquium where students present their research findings to NYU faculty, graduate students, and peers, and showcase their work at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) Poster Symposium.
A typical day involves conducting research in an NYU faculty lab, receiving mentorship from NYU researchers, and contributing to ongoing projects. The in-person lab work runs Monday-Friday from 9 AM to 4 PM.
This program is best for academically motivated high school students in 10th or 11th grade who reside in NYC and have a demonstrated passion for STEM and an interest in pursuing scientific research.
