NYU GSTEM offers a highly selective, immersive six-week research experience with direct mentorship from university professors and scientists, focusing on empowering underrepresented groups in STEM.
The NYU GSTEM program is a six-week intensive summer research program designed for talented high school students with a strong interest and aptitude in STEM. The program aims to immerse students in scientific research and empower those historically underrepresented in STEM fields, particularly girls and other minorities. Participants are paired with a STEM professor or researcher from NYU or other institutions across New York City to work on individual, hands-on research projects in diverse fields such as biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and physics.
Beyond the intensive research experience, the program includes a week-long orientation with social activities, workshops, and lectures. Students also attend weekly field trips to various STEM organizations and hear from panels of women scientists, gaining exposure to real-world applications of STEM and networking opportunities. Throughout the program, students develop critical STEM skills including laboratory techniques, programming abilities, scientific writing, and presentation skills, culminating in a symposium where they present their research projects.
From Monday to Thursday, students are encouraged to treat the program like a full-time job, engaging in a full day's work that can vary from conducting experiments in a lab to coding in a library, depending on their research project and mentor's schedule. Fridays are dedicated to group activities at NYU, including field trips and project discussions.
This program is ideal for current high school juniors with a high aptitude in STEM who are interested in pursuing STEM research and want to gain valuable hands-on experience and mentorship in a supportive and inclusive environment.
