This tuition-free program offers a unique blend of advanced STEM skills, entrepreneurship training, and real-world smart city application development, culminating in a public presentation of student-designed prototypes.
The NYU Tandon ieSoSC (Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Science of Smart Cities) program is a 5-week summer program designed for high school students to advance their technology and engineering skills through design and prototyping, built around real-world "smart city" applications and research. Students engage in hands-on projects covering coding, microcontrollers, circuit deployment, and sensor integration. The curriculum also integrates entrepreneurial thinking and design skills, including product development, project management, economics, finance, patents, copyrights, and pitching. Participants form small teams to ideate, prototype, and present a device or app using an Internet of Things approach to address smart city challenges. The program culminates in a public presentation where teams showcase their ideas and prototypes to engineers, urban planners, STEM experts, and the general public.
Students attend classes taught by NYU faculty and graduate students, engaging in highly interactive and hands-on activities from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, working with materials, tools, and software to develop research, design, and engineering skills.
The ideal student is an NYC resident currently in 8th, 9th, or 10th grade with a strong academic record and demonstrated interest in STEM, passionate about addressing issues in urban areas.
